Overview
Humectants are moisture-attracting ingredients that draw water into the skin, helping to maintain hydration, strengthen the skin barrier and keep the skin soft, smooth and healthy-looking.
Detailed Information
Hydration That Starts from Within the Skin. Humectants are hygroscopic ingredients and one of the most important groups of ingredients in modern skincare. They work by attracting and binding water to the outer layers of the skin, helping to maintain optimal hydration and support a healthy skin barrier. Healthy skin naturally contains substances known as Natural Moisturising Factors (NMFs) that help retain water. When the skin becomes dehydrated through ageing, environmental exposure, harsh cleansers or skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, these natural moisture reserves decline. Humectants replenish hydration by drawing moisture from deeper layers of the skin—and, when humidity is sufficient, from the surrounding environment—into the outermost layer of the skin. This leaves the skin feeling softer, smoother, plumper and more comfortable while supporting long-term barrier health. Humectants are an essential component of moisturizers designed for dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin and are suitable for almost every skin type. Examples includes- Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin, Urea, Panthenol
